On August 2nd, I present a paper at UNSW, Sydney, entitled: “What’s ‘Experimental’ about Philosophy?”

PROFILE:
I joined the Department of Philosophy at HKU in 2001, after spending several years completing a PhD and teaching in Australia. Originally from Ireland, where I did my BA at UCD, I also spent some years in Paris doing an MA at the University of Paris X, and researching at the Foucault Archives (now at IMEC in Caen).
My major research interests are in the fields of ethics, politics, and the philosophy of literature and art, with a particular focus on 20th century European philosophy. I have published extensively on the work of Michel Foucault. In recent years I have published in the area of the philosophy of literature, especially in relation to the works of modern and contemporary Irish writers.
I also work on comparative (East-West) philosophical approaches to happiness – an area in which I have established a major collaborative research project at HKU. This now includes a collaborative project with the Department of Psychology at HKU on notions of psychological well-being. See links for the Happiness East and West Project above. As an extension of this interest, I have completed a Master in Counselling (Monash) and now practice as a counsellor and psychotherapist in Central, Hong Kong (see link below).
At HKU, I have taught courses on Foucault, Nietzsche, happiness, contemporary European philosophy, philosophy of art and literature, Plato, and the philosophical problems of modernity.
I supervise post-graduate students in the fields of 20th century European philosophy, ethics in the continental tradition, and aesthetics.
